Firstly, planning what story i was going to tell and what photo's i wanted of was the first thing i needed to decide. I wanted photos that clearly told a story but could mean something as an individual photo. However , the first and last photo would shape my story and tell the story I wanted. Righting down my ideas gave me a clear idea of what I wanted and righting ideas down also built up a story line.
Once that was decided, i started thinking of how I would tell the story but i had my story. How would the time of day affect it? Was there going to be photo's of people in it?
I knew I wanted the story to be told in my/the viewers point of view but I just needed to be sure I was able to still tell the same story. I was going to tell the story so therefore the things in the photo had to be something I was holding or I was looking at. Almost like the audience were the ones there in the story.
Planning the time of day was important. My story was going to be of someone close, a friend or family member leaving the house or for this part of the story, the viewer could choose where the family member or friend had gone but knowing where this person had gone wasn't needed, the viewers just need to know that they weren't there when someone should be.
I had to decide if it was going to be late at night or early in the morning. I knew having a natural source of light would show a time of day and make the quality of the picture better but the time of day didn't affect my story or the main point of it. I decided that I wanted the light, especially the early morning sun which most of photos showed.
Because of it being early, there was a sense of someone being alone. There could be many reasons for the house being empty at this time. Someone could have left for work or to take younger children to school. At this point, I had chosen a family member to be the person who had left. There could be other things that the viewers could think of why that person wasn't there. But the photos were taken inside of the house, probably an idea of being at home and family.
Then there was that sense of waiting. The clock? A watch ? I tested the two but I chose the clock. The fact that it was hanging on a wall and I had to be standing to actually see the clock and thinking about it, the sense of me standing up would show that i was being impatient and wary. That's why i wanted it. Plus the clock would show the importance of why this person was being so long to come back unlike a wrist watch. But would they come back?
I tried to get as many of my photos to mean more than they were actually showing but a few didn't succeed in doing so.
So now i had my story and my photos. I just now had to take them in for them to be edited. Once arriving, i found for some reason the photos i had taken needed to be converted but they couldn't so despite having taking the photos , i had nothing to work with.
I therefore couldn't make the photo essay so i don't have a film. If i could change things, i would have made sure i check my photos are compatible with the Mac's in college.
